What is an Entrepreneur? PDF Print E-mail
When Marc asked me to be a writer on this site I was thrilled for a while and then I was stumped. I was first excited to share my business experiences, thrills and successes to a new audience then I realized that this would not be sufficient for an article or column at this level. I then did a simple browse of the forum that was first started on facebook and saw the initial conversation spawned by the group main image (what a marketing power house) and realized that I can start with the basics. What is an Entrepreneur?

This is a very controversial topic in some circles (yes I know, what kind of circles will argue about entrepreneurship) so I decided without a doubt that we will explore this notion.

Webster gives a meaning for an Entrepreneur by stating, “One who organizes, manages and assumes the risk of a business enterprise” which is pretty basic and somewhat insulting, by reducing us to twelve words. Joseph Schumpeter, a Moravian- economist gave us a modern definition of an entrepreneur from an economic stand point as, “The person who destroys the existing economic order by introducing new products and services, by creating new forms of organizations, or by exploiting new raw materials.” According to Schumpeter, the entrepreneur is most likely to accomplish this destruction by founding a new business but may also do it in an existing one. Joseph did come up with a pretty good definition (I just felt like calling him by first name) , but the truth is few companies actually “destroy” the economic order as Apple did in the computer industry, many companies come into existing markets and find a niche. As the noted Serial Entrepreneur of island masterminds’ website, I will take the liberty of giving a broad definition for our entrepreneur as, “Anyone who starts a business”. When asked, one of my colleagues went as far as saying, “Anyone who starts something”, which can be pretty true as we now see many social entrepreneurs (a topic for a different day). William D Bygrave says, “An entrepreneur is someone who perceives an opportunity and creates an organization to pursue it”, and I think this is a pretty broad but precise definition of an entrepreneur (I guess fifteen words is better suited to defining us)

Are you an entrepreneur? Do you have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur? We hope to take some of you wannabe entrepreneurs and transform you into success stories.
